Have you ever had a client come in to get their nails done, they sit down with purpose like they know exactly what they want. You relax because this is going to be an easy customer. You ask what color and they say, “Well …” And you start stressing. “I want a nude.” Suggesting a color that complements their skin tone is a professional and extra service that will absolutely impress your client. When clients come in they know that you are the professional and they look to you for your professional opinion. If this is a new customer then you have a perfect opportunity to create a loyal client for life by suggesting the ideal color that complements their skin tone. This question is sure to come up, especially with all the nude color trends so don’t worry, we’ve got you. The first thing that you need to do is determine what undertones the clients skin has. By studying the inner wrist and asking a few simple questions you can become the color guru you have always wanted to be. Warm undertones tan easily and don’t frequently burn. Warm undertones have green colored veins. The colors that flatter warm tones best are orange, yellow, ivory and gold. Neutral undertones are the most desired skin tones because warm and cool color complement their skin! If you can’t really tell the color of their veins or if they don’t neatly fit into the other categories they are probably neutral. Any color looks great on them and everyone is silently jealous. Cool undertones are the opposite of warm and usually don’t tan as easily and burn more often. When you look at these veins they are usually blue. The colors that complement this tone are shades of blue, pink, white and silver. One of the things people repeatedly do when picking a nude is that they pick a color that perfectly matches their skin tone. While this is not inherently wrong, and doesn’t look necessarily bad, it is a little boring right? And it’s way too easy. Try and complement the skin tone and the undertones with a color that is not a perfect match, but enhances the natural beauty of the skin! If you choose a shade or two darker or lighter than the skin tone then it offers a subtler option that also looks intentional. This gives a classy and timeless manicure that any client would love to show off. An even quicker little tip is to just examine the clients nail bed. A nude polish that matches the nail bed will more than likely be a perfect choice for their skin tone. This hack was way too simple to put at the beginning, but simple doesn’t mean it’s not genius.
